A Gary Police officer has been charged with one count of
ghost employment and two of theft, the Indiana State Police said. According to
the ISP, on Thursday GPD Officer Jennifer Powell, 36, of Gary, was formally
charged.
“These charges stem from an investigation that began in
January at the request of the Gary Police Department,” the ISP said. “Powell
was working a full-time job at the Gary Police Department in its Detective
Bureau and was working full-time at the Lake County Jail, in addition to
holding a third job with a local trucking company working security.”
Powell’s position at the LCJ was recently terminated, the
ISP added. All charges against Powell are Class D felonies, punishable by a
term of six months to three years.
